Thanks Kevin for filling in the correct details. I have not followed all the telecom/wireless mergers. I do know that with all the mergers going on, consumers will not benefit from the reduced competitions. I haven't seen any price reduction at all in the basic wireless plans for almost three years now. Now telecom companies market their bundled solutions, which forces you to consume and pay more.

actually cingualr came as a result of Bell South and the former ATT creating a seperate Cell company. Now ATT was bought by SBC, who became the new ATT (owning 80% of cingular). They now have an offer on the table, if approved by regulators to buy Bell South. If that goes through, they will own 100% of cingular and will change Cingular's name back to AT&T. According to the news article from a month or two ago.

There are some occasions that I get tempted to join those family talk plan. Especially after 9 months from now, I will be paying $16.67 a month instead of $6.42 a month for the two phones that I have. But I know for sure, I just can't use all those minutes. Why bother throwing away money, when I can keep rolling over my minutes before expiration, and save up all of those left-over minutes for potential emergency calls. Plus, if it's emergency, you can simply refill right away with more money. That's the great thing about pre-paid phones.
I don't have a fancy cell phone like many others do, but I get to keep ($37.x - $3.21) * 12 = $408 a year. I can definitely think of some better ways to spend those money, than calling all of my friends for long distance just to want to use up all the unneeded minutes.

I have been struggling with what to do with my cell phone bill. I spend $37.xx a month on my plan and I have never come close to using all the minutes. I didn't even have a cell phone until a couple years ago when I started dating my girlfriend and it was a long distance call to her house. I quickly determined signing up for a cell phone plan just to handle those calls would pay for itself :-). I cancelled my landline so now it is my sole phone.

I got to find a way to bring it down to your price range :-). Its on my to do list.

I went to several grocery stores, and it looks Cingular has cleaned up all of the outstanding AT&T refill cards. Now, the cheapest plan that you can get is the $100 / year, or $8.33 a month. I still have 3 sets of refill cards for my two phones. Those will last me for another 9 months.

[...] It’s true, and you might not believe it for yourself until you read the story straight from My 1st million at 33. For those of you who only use a cell phone for a small number of minutes each month, you can save a bundle by following the strategy outlined in this article. I buy those refill phone cards by AT&T at the rotary stands from the grocery store (usually at Ralph store in CA). Because these cards were issued long time ago, they still have AT&T printed on them, and still have $10 refill cards for 90 days expiration. [...]
