  • My Networth Page is Ready

Posted by Frugal on May 16th, 2006

Finally, after a month of delay, I have a page that shows the composition of my stock portfolio updated automatically twice a day.  As you can see, my portfolio mainly consists of energy and precious metal stocks.  Sector-wise, it is obviously not very diversified.  Furthermore, I have a very substantial stake in my employer stock.  Because of the non-diversification, in the last six calendar days (or four trading days), my networth has shrunk by almost 10%, while my portfolio (excluding cash) shrunk by 8%.  Individual stock-wise, many of my stocks are down 20 to 30% from the last high.  Despite such a big fall, my portfolio is still up for the year.

For anyone investing in these two sectors: energy and precious metals, I highly advise to gradually phase in or phase out of your positions.  The volatility is very big, and if you get in or out at the wrong time, your overall return will reduce dramatically.  Obviously, you also need to be able to digest such volatility.  If not, you should reduce the allocation percentage of these sectors until you can accept the final weighted volatility.

I’m going to add a history & gain/loss information to this page later.  For now, I really need to spend more time on watching over my investment.
