  • Knowing when to quit can be more important than being persistent

Posted by Frugal on September 11th, 2006

When I was preparing for the Carnival of Business #21, I came across Christine Kane’s article on “Are You A Quitter?”. She discussed how one could introspect oneself to do the best things instead of sticking it out. Very practical wisdom and insights to life.

In today’s competitive society where achievement is over-emphasized, and successful completion is more important than anything else, winning or losing seems to be the only thing that matters. Being persistent is always valued highly, since it is a trait of winner who can over-stay all other competitors. However, like everything in life, if there is yang, then there is yin. There are always two sides. Where is the other side of being persistent?

I won’t repeat my post about the ordeal and depression that I went through during my first graduate degree here. At the depth of my depression, I was lucky to read a quote that helped me: Lord grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” by Saint Francis of Assisi. It’s a beautiful quote. When would one know to accept the things as they are, and move on? It is difficult indeed.

Besides the choice of quitting or being persistent, in fact, one should re-arrange the priority of things whenever necessary. It may not be a black and white choice. When your life changes, it is required from you to de-prioritize certain things and/or emphasize other things. Putting your priority in order will help you to focus your time and energy on the things that you need most for your life.

As Christine has suggested, putting away your big ego and reflecting on your situation will help you to choose the thing that’s best for you (and there is no right or wrong in such decisions). A little quiet time with your inner self away from noises in life will lead you to a far more satisfactory life.

By the way, Christine is a musician who blogs. As a music lover, I couldn’t resist to listen to some of her music. It’s not bad at all, even though it’s not my favorite type of music which is new age. In any case, I was really glad to read her wise article and I highly recommend you to read it too.
