Can you beat TheGroceryGame.Com?

Posted by Frugal on April 8th, 2008

Watching how Teri shops is just amazing. I thought it’s hard to find someone like my wife who really can get grocery deals thru usage of coupons. But Teri is a couple of steps beyond.

I saw the TV program for TheGroceryGame.Com. She walked out of the grocery store, paying only about $80 for some $280 worth of grocery. The numbers are amazing. But the image of her walking away with an entire shopping cart FULL, but paying only $80, is just awesome. I’m sure that you and I know how much grocery you can buy with just $80 these days. Maybe half of the shopping cart of grocery at best.

She keeps tracks of on-sale items and also her coupons. I just can’t imagine that someone would go into so many details for grocery shopping. But hey, her results are just unbeatable.

My only regret is that you need to sign up & pay at her website for specific grocery information. While I have not personally tried it, I suspect that you probably will net a positive sum by using her service.

Can you buy boxes of cereals for $1 or less in the recent month? If you can, I suppose you’re on the right track. They have been on-sale, plus that if you have the corresponding manufacturer’s or store coupon, you can get them at $1 or less. My wife just stocked up many boxes.

I guess grocery shopping can really be a game that you can win. It’s even more important with the food cost going up these days.

If you have any experiences with Teri’s website/service, please do let me know by leaving some comments. Thanks.

Now that Ron Paul dropped out, who are you voting for?

My wife and I have had an on-again, off-again relationship with The Grocery Game for over a year now. We sign up for the trial, pay a few months for the membership, get tired of the same coupons/products on the lists and cancel. We repeat this process a couple times a year. No, I don’t think we can beat Teri’s shopping trips, but if we tried we would wind up with a bunch of stuff we don’t eat, which kind of defeats the purpose.

I am an avid fan of Teri, and a current and previous member of The Grocery Game site. Just this evening I went grocery shopping and the initial register total was $173 and when the got done deducting my coupons, doubling them, and the store card specials, the total was just over $100. And yes, I bought food I wanted and will eat. I consider this nothing short of amazing, and well worth both the minimal amount the site charges to be a member and the hour or so it takes me each week to cut and organize coupons. Printable coupons make the deals even better, as long as you check first that the store accepts them. Don’t get me started on the week where I went into Ralphs with a stack of printable coupons and the gal at the register declared, “Sorry, we don’t take those.” (She was wrong, a manager proved later.)

And to answer your question, yes, it’s absolutely possible to buy cereal for $1 - you just can’t be picky about what KIND of cereal you are going to eat. It’s a good thing my husband’s not a picky eater, and I consider it a challenge to build a meal plan based on the stuff I get nearly free.

QueerCents has a post about groceries from today too, (I replied there also) you should check it out!

My wife has been doing this since she quit her job to stay home w/ our 2 kids in May 2006, & she never leaves the store spending more than she saved. The amt of time she saves to do the research Teri does is more than worth the small fee. I would say the biggest adjustment is brand loyalty. You cannot be brand loyal, b/c you are buying whatever brand is participating in the sales & coupons.

Also, she gets most excited when they actually pay her to take something home. It truly is fun…to find other ways to spend the money you would have otherwise wasted on consumables.
